Primary Responsibilities

HDR is looking for Senior Water/Wastewater Control Systems Engineer to serve in a project lead role in support of our national Control Systems practice which includes full-service capabilities for clients primarily in the Water/Wastewater market and also in other industries and market sectors providing control system assessment, planning, design, automation programming/configuration, testing & commissioning, and maintenance.

The primary role of this position is to lead the planning, design, and implementation of automated process control and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems in coordination with clients and multidiscipline teams to develop solutions for construction and implementation in the Water/Wastewater market sectors. Additional roles include Control Systems programming, testing, implementing and commissioning the control system as designed

In this role, the Water/Wastewater Control Systems EIT / Engineer will also lead the assessment of existing control systems and planning activities related to control systems improvements and replacement. This position involves exercising judgment in evaluation and selection of equipment and system components and coordinating closely with multidiscipline design teams through all stages of design including schematic, design development, and construction documents. The individual will be responsible for creating biddable and technically accurate construction documents including drawings and specifications, as well as conducting reviews of documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines and will also be involved in coordination during construction phases including the review of shop drawings and construction observation. The individual must be self-motivated with an initiative to deliver high quality, technically excellent SCADA/I&C designs.

In addition this individual will develop Client relationships internal and external and help develop Control System Business within the W/WW industry and other market sectors. This individual will also assist in preparing marketing materials and assist in proposal preparation for W/WW projects including developing scope and fee for Control System Work.

Responsibilities/Duties include:

  • Travel to client facilities to participate in field activities to assess and document the current state of installed control systems.
  • Participate in and lead design review and planning meetings with the client.
  • Lead the development of preliminary engineering reports and Studies focused on recommending and developing solutions for control system improvements.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record in responsible charge for the development of biddable and technically accurate SCADA/I&C construction documents.
  • Interface with Electrical and Process Engineers to fully coordinate design requirements for network, power, control, and instrumentation.
  • Participate in the planning and specification of applied technology solutions including instrumentation and control, advanced automation and control, artificial intelligence, Operational Technology (OT) networking, data analytics, augmented reality, and vision control.
  • Assist with the selection and specification of process instrumentation, control panels, and network equipment.
  • Assist with the development of biddable and technically accurate SCADA / I&C construction documents including P&IDs, network architecture diagrams, control panel layouts and wiring diagrams, installation details, loop drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Lead control system programming workshops including alarm management and rationalization.
  • Lead Control System Programming Teams for PLC's, HMI and OIT programming.
  • Assist with system testing and commissioning activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Electrical, Controls or Chemical Engineering.
  • Valid PE or ability to obtain in 12 months. Candidates hired without their PE will have the title of "Water/Wastewater Control Systems EIT" and will be expected to obtain their PE for career progression.
  • 10 years of applicable experience.
  • Hands on experience designing I&C systems, including schematics and loops required.
  • Network design experience for Industrial Control or SCADA or OT systems.
  • Knowledgeable of remote site telemetry communications.
  • Knowledgeable of cybersecurity considerations for Industrial Control or SCADA or OT systems.
  • Knowledgeable of network, PLC hardware/software, and SCADA/HMI software used in Water/Wastewater applications.
  • Experience in programming Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and/or Distributed Control System (DCS), SCADA HMI and OIT.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Testing, Commissioning and Start Up experience
  • Preference given to local candidates
